iPhone Screen Explained

"iPhone Screen Explained" - a must read article for every broken-screen-iPhone owner.

All iPhone LCD screens and glass digitizers sold at LaptopScreen.com are replacement-ready modules pre-assembled at the factory.

The iPhone screens that we sell come as direct drop-in replacement modules that consist of multiple components. Please have a look at the diagram below, which depicts typical elements of every iPhone screen model to date (January 2013). Two major distinct components are the front assembly and the LCD screen itself.

iPhone's front assembly
The front assembly consists of a transparent top layer glass digitizer (1), which is basically printed onto the glass pane (7). The information about users' touch input is transmitted to the logic board via the iPhone's digitizer connector (2).
The front assembly is connected to the iPhone's case itself via mounting tabs (6).
Some other important components of the front assembly are the ambient light sensor window (3), top speaker cut out (4), front-facing video camera window (5) and the home button cut out (8).

iPhone's LCD screen
The LCD screen (11) used in iPhones is based on the same technology found on laptops - Liquid Crystal Display, and the backlight is provided by a series of LEDs - Light Emitting Diodes (10). The screen is connected to the logic board via its own connector (9).

Why did you need to know all that technical non-sense?
The Internet is full of shops that sell iPhone front assembly and LCD screens separately, suggesting that they are to be put together by the buyers themselves.
Well, our best technicians tried to assemble these parts together, that are purchases separately, and every time the end results were far from acceptable: colors were off, blacks were grey, touches were mis-aligned and you could tell just by looking at the phone itself that it was previously damaged.

What is the way out?
If you want your after-repair-iPhone to look as close to brand new as possible always buy complete iPhone front assembly with LCD screen pre-mounted at the factory.
That is why all iPhone screen replacements you can buy at LaptopScreen.com will be factory pre-assembled replacement pieces consisting of an LCD screen and a front assembly with glass digitizer.

1 - Transparent top layer glass digitizer. The glass digitizer is a pane of glass with semi-transparent conducting elements arranged in a grid, with an attached controller. The controller interprets the position of the finger on the grid via variance in capacity, which occurs when the finger is on the touch screen - and that is why iPhone touch screens are referred to as capacitive. One more neat thing to note about capacitive touch screen technology (as opposed to resistive) is that it allows for interpretation of multiple touches at the same time - which is why it is also called multi-touch.
2 - Digitizer connector to the main board (logic board).
3 - Ambient light sensor window. Ambient light sensor is responsible for auto-brightness, proximity detection.
4 - Speaker opening, usually covered with a grille on the inside.
5 - Front-facing camera window.
6 - Front assembly mounting tabs (3 of 10).
7 - Front assembly's top glass layer.
8 - Home button cut out.
9 - LCD connector to the main board.
10 - LEDs for back-light (3 of 6).
11 - LCD panel (screen itself).

Here at LaptopScreen.com we have researched, cross-referenced sources, and have made an educated decision to never buy or sell the iPhone screen separately from the iPhone touch-screen digitizer.
